Our professional experience in agriculture, together with our learning in regenerative agriculture, permaculture design, and soil biology, changed the way we understand the land. We began to see an opportunity to bring this knowledge to animal sanctuaries—places where care for animals is already at the heart of the work. We created Sustainable Sanctuary Project to make this possible.
Through years of professional work in crop production, we gained experience with the challenges of managing land and supporting productive growing systems.
We also saw the environmental costs associated with some conventional practices. Our work included helping reduce pesticide use and other environmental harms and exploring approaches more aligned with natural processes.
Learning about soil biology opened up a deeper understanding of what happens beneath the surface. We began to see how microbial communities and their relationships with plants contribute to soil structure, nutrient cycling, and the functioning of living systems. We wanted to use our experience in a way that directly supports places committed to protecting animals rather than exploiting them.
Learning about soil microbiology did more than change how we approach land management. It changed how we see the world.
The more we learned about the relationships among microbes, plants, animals, water, and ecosystems, the more interconnected everything became. What happens beneath our feet can influence the plants growing above, the organisms those plants support, and the movement of water and nutrients through the landscape.
Life is not a collection of isolated parts. It is a network of relationships, many of which we cannot see without looking more closely.
This understanding deepened our sense of responsibility toward the living world. It reminded us that ecological care is not only about what we can see or what directly benefits us. The small, often overlooked forms of life matter, too.
For us, soil health became about much more than growing plants. It became one way of understanding and supporting the relationships that sustain life.
We have long believed that animals should be recognized as individuals, not treated as commodities or resources. Sanctuaries embody this principle by giving animals care and protection without making exploitation the purpose of their lives.
We believe the land that supports these animals deserves thoughtful care, too.
Sanctuaries should have access to the knowledge and tools that can help them understand their land and make informed ecological decisions. Our project exists to help bridge that gap by providing free soil-health consulting.
We see this work as one practical expression of a larger belief: coexistence without exploitation is possible, and caring for animals and caring for the Earth belong together.
Sustainable Sanctuary Project is at the beginning of its journey. Our immediate focus is to work with sanctuaries, provide useful soil-health consulting, and build the resources needed to make the work sustainable.
Over time, we hope to extend this support to more sanctuaries and build community and connections between sanctuaries doing this work.
We know that this takes time, resources, and the support of people who believe in the purpose behind the project.
If this vision resonates with you, we invite you to help us make it possible.
